— The Lincoln Public Schools has partnered with the Nebraska Parks and Recreation Department and the Lincoln National Forest to create a new national park.
Lincoln is one of the first places in the country to be designated as a National Recreation Area.
In the years leading up to its creation, the Lincoln Public School’s staff and volunteers were part of a community-led effort to preserve the area for its own unique purpose.
The area now boasts a variety of natural resources, including beautiful lakes, mountains, rivers, forests and wildflowers, as well as scenic trails and parks, playgrounds and recreation facilities.
The National Park Service, through the National Park Conservation Association, will manage the area, with participation from the Lincoln community.
The park will be open to the public for five years beginning in 2018.
The parks team is looking for anyone interested in participating in the project.
“This park has been under constant development since we started working on it, and we are thrilled to be able to bring it to life in this way,” said Dan Moseley, Parks and Rec Director for Lincoln.
“Our goal is to inspire people to learn more about their community and preserve it for future generations to enjoy.”
